As the season moves on RSL's results are becoming all too familiar. Yes, there is improvement, but not enough to make us a playoff caliber team (unless the league lets us play all remaining games at RES).
When I look at the standings there is one surprise that seems to stand out. The Columbus Crew. Is there anybody else that looks at their placement thinking..."Wait a minute", that was supposed to be us!
Columbus finished last season second-to-last in the Eastern Conference and out of the playoffs. In 2006 they finished last in the league, even lower than RSL. And in 2005 they were also out of the playoffs finishing higher than only expansion clubs.
Now 2008 rolls around and they lead the league with 19 points. They would have to lose and either Chicago or New England would have to win for Columbus to even be sharing that first place slot.
When I look at Columbus I don't see a roster of superstars or even anybody all that note worthy after Schelloto and Hejduk. Well, they are note worthy now, but could you name four Crew members before the season started? Maybe with some good thought, but Columbus is everything we thought we were getting in SLC this season. One or two names (Beckerman) followed by young talent (and international 'gems') that would take the league by surprise. Only that didn't happen, there is no surprise to be found...unless you are looking in Columbus, Ohio.
Now Mr. Sigi Schmid looks like a genius and RSL fans look like, well RSL fans. We haven't changed much over the years. I imagine they could follow RSL fans around with a video camera after away games if they wanted to make a convincing 'before shot' for anti-depressant medication commercials.
Congratulations to the Crew...you are everything we thought we were going to be.
Excuse me sir? That's what I ordered.
